One of my goals when I started building Vincent was to streamline the creation of maps as much as possible. There are some excellent Python map libraries out there- see Basemap and Kartograph for more fun with maps. I highly recommend both of those tools, as they are both quite good and very powerful. I wanted something a little simpler, that relies on the power of Vega and allows for simple syntax- point to geoJSON files, specify a projection and scale/size, output the map.
While we run our own 15 course Digital Scholarship Training programme for staff at the Library* we are always on the look-out for further training opportunities for colleagues. The following is a small selection of what’s on our radar at the moment. If you can recommend others coming up please do let us know in the comments!
The 2013 Digital Library Federation (DLF) Forum, to be held November 3–6, 2013 in Austin, Texas, is seeking “proposals for presentations, panel discussions, workshops, research updates, and hands-on, problem-solving sessions.” The DLF is seeking proposals that focus on the themes of digital technology design, management and assessment, data, and collaboration.
What an amazing conference filled with inventive, kind, humorous and wickedly smart people. About 350 of you showed up and it was so much fun.
Because it was such a busy conference and we didn’t all have a chance to see each other’s papers, we’re asking conference participants to post their talks here on HASTAC. The talks will still be in their original form and not re-edited for written publication. The goal is to get them shared, not perfect them into another format. “Cut and paste” is the idea!
You can embed your slides from Slideshare or Prezi or many other media sources. Let one of us know if you have questions.
We will put the blogs and photos together in a more constructed way at some point, but in the meantime, here’s an ongoing list of the blogs posted on HASTAC – either blogs about the event, or talks that were given at the event.
To upload yours to the site, just log in, then post as a blog. Tag with HASTAC 2013 and I’ll find it. Please let me know if I miss yours inadverdently!

Join our discussion to shape the direction of WebWriting, a book-in-progress sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning at Trinity College. This born-digital, open-access volume integrates why questions with online examples and tutorials to illustrate how faculty and students are doing this work. Topics include: Why should we integrate the web into our teaching of writing? How does student engagement and faculty pedagogy change when we post our ideas online? Which tools deepen (or distract from) thoughtful learning? What strategies can help the liberal arts to address these digital-era challenges and opportunities?
